Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu, the 17-year-old rising star in Canadian women’s tennis, lost in her first time playing in the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Tuesday night in the featured match on centre court, but provided a glimpse of her talent.

Andreescu, the youngest player in the tournament, lost 6-4, 6-1 to Hungary’s Timea Babos, who came into the tournament winless in her last nine matches. Babos is ranked 42nd in the Women’s Tennis Association. Andreescu is ranked 144th. Andreescu made some solid shots, but had a hard time dealing with Babos’ powerful serve.

Andreescu earned a wildcard entry into the tournament from Tennis Canada after making it to the quarter-finals in a tournament in Washington.

Andreescu is scheduled to play in a doubles match Wednesday night with Carson Branstine.
