Newcomers to Brampton can get to get to know their new city by joining in on a free bus tour.

On December 5 and 7 the tour departs from Brampton Library’s Chinguacousy Branch at 150 Central Peel Dr. and will take newcomers on a three-hour tour that showcases the city’s facilities, services and history. You have to register in advance and those who have lived in Brampton since 2014 are eligible.

The tour has been operating successfully since 2009 and is run in conjunction with the City of Brampton, Brampton Transit and Brampton Library. Earlier this year the “Newcomer Bus Tour” won an award from the American Library Association in recognition of its innovation.

Marie Toor said she took the tour when she moved to Brampton in 2011 and that it was a great way to familiarize her family with the community.

“Usually when you move to a new place you have to figure this stuff out for yourself,” she said. “The tour showed us what we needed to know to get started. It was really great for our kids.”

Highlights include a visit to one of the city’s recreations centres to learn about programs being offered as well as a library visit that showcases all of the resources available to the community. The tour also explains how Brampton Transit works by using maps, transfers and the PRESTO fare card.

Heritage areas, parks, municipal buildings and other important locations will also be pointed out along the route.
