Caledon Business Innovation Zone officially opens

On June 26, the Town of Caledon unveiled a newly-designed space at town hall dedicated to the development of entrepreneurship and innovation. The Caledon Business Innovation Zone (CBIZ) supports entrepreneurs in getting their business ideas off the ground, or small business owners wishing to network, learn and expand their businesses.

“There’s so much untapped talent and expertise in our business community,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “Sometimes all it takes is a little guidance to turn that spark of an idea into a real business, and CBIZ will be a focus for that.”

CBIZ (“see-biz”) is a specially-designed space with a meeting room, Internet-enabled workstation, reception area, washroom, and resource centre. Staffed by the town economic development office, CBIZ offers one-on-one consultations, business reviews, networking events, online learning resources, and seminars.

The inspiration for CBIZ arose from a brainstorming session during a Mayor’s Business Breakfast workshop in 2015, with a focus on improving the business climate in town. Creation of a business retention and expansion task force was the result, where business, community and government representatives explore business issues in Caledon.

Caledon’s economic development staff conducted surveys and interviews with dozens of Caledon businesses as part of the task force’s initiatives. One of the key recommendations arising from the feedback was the formation of CBIZ as “an innovation hub to organically drive Caledon’s economy and make it sustainable.”

The town economic development office has been offering services under the CBIZ brand since early 2017. The opening of new space in town hall is the latest development in the evolution of the program.

In conjunction with the CBIZ workspace launch, the town has also restyled the business section of its website for use by entrepreneurs, business owners, and investors.

As part of the theme, Caledon: the Natural Course of Business, which promotes the town’s appeal as a place to do business, the website features a new research portal designed to help investors access important information. Developed with Canadian technology firm Localintel, the new portal includes an overview of Caledon’s main industries, its infrastructure network, environment, land uses, demographics and overall business climate.
