Cole Carter scored his team-leading 11th goal and Jacob Ingham made 25 saves to lead the Mississauga Steelheads to a 4-3 win over the Battalion, Oct. 18, at the North Bay Memorial Garden.
The win was the second-straight for the Central Division-leading Steelheads (7-2-1), who also got goals from Richard Whittaker, Ryan Barbosa and Adam Varga.
Mississauga jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Whittaker and Carter, before North Bay (4-7) replied early in the second with goals by Matthew Struthers and Justin Brazeau, a little more than three minutes apart, to tie things up.
Barbosa, with his first OHL goal, put Mississauga back on top just 1:21 later when he took a feed from Ryan McLeod and snapped one from the right faceoff circle past North Bay goalie Christian Propp, but the Troops tied it again, just four minutes later, on a wrist shot by Brandon Coe.
Varga would get the game winner with just 1:24 left in a busy second period. Cole Schwindt slid the puck to a streaking Varga down the right side and the second-year forward squeezed it between Propp’s pads for his first of the year.
Mississauga will be well represented in the upcoming 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series.
Florida Panthers prospect Owen Tippett and Edmonton Oilers prospect Ryan McLeod will be suiting up for Team OHL in both games set for Nov. 8 at Sarnia and Nov. 12 at Oshawa. The special exhibition will see an all-star team of Russian juniors take on the OHL, WHL and QMJHL twice each in a six-game mini-series.
Also earlier this week, Steelheads rookie James Hardie was one of 27 OHL players selected to represent Canada at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, set for Nov. 3-10 at Saint John and Quispamsis, NB. The 16-year-old Innisfil native, who was Mississauga’s eighth overall selection in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection, has three goals and an assist in nine games this season.
The Steelheads return to action Oct. 19 when they play host to the Peterborough Petes. Game time at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre is 7 p.m.
