Local students are asked to put their best feet forward on Feb. 7 for Winter Walk to School Day.
Since 1996, Green Communities Canada has been a leading organization promoting active school travel. The goal is simple: to make walking, cycling and other forms of active, safe and sustainable transportation the norm for trips to and from school.
The benefits of active school travel include healthier students, fewer emissions and less air pollution along with safer school zones and healthier communities.
Increased active school travel supports the Ontario Climate Action Plan greenhouse gas reduction target of 80 per cent by 2050 by reducing vehicle emissions.
Also, reducing traffic volumes at bell times creates safer school zones for all students and improving walking and cycling routes to school enhances the safety, connectivity and quality of life for the community as a whole.
