In time for her centenarian year, Hazel McCallion, in partnership with Trillium Health Partners Foundation (THPF), is releasing a commemorative photo book chronicling her remarkable life and outstanding achievements as Mississauga’s fifth and longest-serving mayor.
A lifelong champion of health care in Mississauga, McCallion led the drive to build Trillium Health Partners’ (THP) Credit Valley Hospital site in 1976.
To mark her milestone birthday on Feb. 14, 2021, Hazel continues to advance modern, accessible health care for the growing community of Mississauga, Peel Region and beyond by dedicating the proceeds from the sale of her 100th Birthday Book to the redevelopment of THP’s Mississauga Hospital site.
“No one embodies the spirit of public service more than Hazel McCallion, who has dedicated almost four decades of her life to the great people and City of Mississauga,” Premier Doug Ford said. “I am proud to call her a friend and advisor. This photo book honours a true legend, while also supporting our frontline heroes at Trillium Health Partners.”
“If we’ve learned anything from COVID-19, it’s the importance our hospitals play in the health and wellbeing of our community,” Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said. “This fundraising effort will go a long way in ensuring residents continue to have a world-class hospital system in Mississauga. What is truly inspirational for me, is that after all these years Hazel continues to find a way to make significant contributions to our City.”
THP is the largest community academic hospital in Ontario, with over 1.75 million patient visits last year. Over the next 20 years, it will see the highest growth in demand for services and the greatest need for incremental bed capacity in the province. THP has played a key role in fighting COVID-19, but has been challenged by the limitations of the aging infrastructure at the Mississauga Hospital site. The new Mississauga Hospital will have more capacity to care for patients, while reflecting the best of today’s standards.
“Hazel McCallion has always believed that excellent health care is the bedrock of a successful city,” noted Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO of THP. “Over the years I have known her, she has energetically supported THP in so many ways and continues to be a great champion for us.”
“I’m going to be turning 100 years old this February but with COVID-19, we had to find an innovative way to celebrate, ” McCallion said. “That’s why I’m honoured to support Trillium Health Partners with this exciting fundraising initiative. This 100th Birthday book will feature a visual story of my life, as well as the many businesses and community members who have helped build this great city and I am excited to share it with my community.”
More than $1 million dollars has already been raised for the initiative from all of the community members who love and admire Hazel. The goal is to raise at least $1.5 million.
“THP has benefitted over many years from Hazel’s unwavering support,” said Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of the THP Foundation. “Once again, she has stepped up to ensure the people of Mississauga can get the care they need by supporting the expansion and redevelopment of Mississauga Hospital. Buy one for yourself, buy another for a friend, it chronicles an incredible individual’s life and it’s all for a great cause.”
