Light Up the Square returns this year, Sat. Nov. 25 at 5pm, when the community gathers to inaugurate the holiday season once again at Celebration Square in Mississauga.
Jennifer Perrault, the events coordinator for the city, says that “it’s really become one of the events that hold a special place for people. It’s nostalgic and has become a family tradition.”
The opening of the rink is a key component of these celebrations, when the city sees thousands turn out from the community.
Mayor Crombie and her council will be on hand to partake in the festivities that include an “extra special” tree lighting ceremony.
This is also the final in a trio of events in the city’s ode to Canada 150 that kicked off with New Year 2017, and now Light Up the Square. “We were inspired by Canada Day 150 and so we incorporated elements of illumination and light and really looked at what makes us truly Canadian,” says Perrault.
The theme this year is based on winter lights or northern lights, with lots of LED programming and a street market with over 50 artesian food vendors on site. She adds that there will be classic winter activities such as fire pits and a smores station.
“There’s tons going on that day, and we really do try and make sure we have something for everyone, and that’s a hard task to accomplish because you have everyone from really little ones all the way to grandparents,” says Perrault.
They have a number of different activity levels, including a glow lounge for families to relax and enjoy the event. Let’s not forget the free hot chocolate that will be provided by presenting sponsor, Rabba Fine Foods.
A total of 50,000 lights will be illuminated onto the square from different angles.
The Hello Winter social media campaign also kicks off that evening and is described by Perrault as a “love letter to the winter season.” Other surprises include a mainstage showcase of the cultural busk program, where artists from across the GTA will perform for the thousands-strong crowd.
