La Cage aux Folles is coming to Meadowvale Theatre this fall. As of 2014, La Cage aux Folles has remained the number 10 foreign film released in the United States of America. The film was the second highest-grossing film of the year in France with 5,406,614 admissions. Roger Ebert gave the story three-and-a-half stars out of four and wrote that “the comic turns in the plot are achieved with such clockwork timing that sometimes we’re laughing at what’s funny and sometimes we’re just laughing at the movie’s sheer comic invention.
After twenty years of unwedded bliss Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse get a bit of both when Georges’ son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the ‘family business’: Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the “star” performer ‘Zaza’. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade a “normal” when he meets the family of the bride-to-be, but Albin has other plans, with hilarious results.
