Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Wainwright is known for such songs as Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk and April Fools, along with notable covers of Hallelujah and Across the Universe.
The son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, he was raised in Canada with his mom and sister. He took up the piano at 13 and wound up touring as part of The McGarrigle Sisters and Family.
Wainwright launched his professional career with the song, I’m a Runnin, which he wrote and performed at 14 in the movie, Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller. It earned him a nomination for a Genie Award in 1989; by 1990 he was Juno Award nominated for Promising Male Vocalist of The Year.
He has released nearly a dozen albums and collaborated with artists from Elton John and David Byrne to Mark Ronson and Joni Mitchell. His album Rufus Does Judy, a live collection featuring songs made famous by Judy Garland and recorded at Carnegie Hall in 2006, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Most recently, his two operas, “Prima Donna” and “Hadrian have brought him even more acclaim as a composer.
