Students from across Peel Region are invited to learn more about careers in the skilled trades at an upcoming evening event.

The Skilled Trade Showcase, taking place Jan. 31 from 5-8 p.m. at West Credit Secondary School in Mississauga, is geared toward showing the career opportunities that are available in labour intensive jobs that require specific training. West Credit is a school that specializes in skilled trade training.

Industry professionals from the fields of auto service, baking, childcare, construction, hairstyling, landscaping and manufacturing will be available to talk to students and their parents about their careers. Representatives of post-secondary institutions will also attend. Display booths, demonstrations and a keynote address will also be part of the presentation.

All levels of government have highlighted the future need for skilled trades workers and want students to consider educational careers other than those in professional fields. They point to the availability of jobs and high earning power as incentives. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program says research shows skilled trade workers fare better than their counterparts when it comes to wages, job security and employment satisfaction.

West Credit Secondary School is located at 6325 Montevideo Rd.  There is no fee to attend and advance registration is not required.
