A visit to Benares Historic House on July 22 promises to be no ordinary day at the museum. It’ll be a time to set your mind free and travel back in time to the strange and curious world of Steampunk.
Visitors will marvel at amazing performances by The Vaudevillian, a Mental Floss Sideshow and the fabulous Mighty Mike. Then, shop the Steampunk market, indulge in tasty treats and be dazzled by stilt walking, penny farthing and teapot racing demonstrations. But, be warned. The Vaudeville Villains will try recruiting visitors to their villainous ways.
What is Steampunk? According to the Airship Ambassador website, it’s an alternate 1800s where the future happened early.
“Essentially, steampunk is an aesthetic, applied to stories, artwork, music, fashion and more, set in, or evocative of, the 19th century,” they explain. “Steampunk has often been set in, but not limited to, Victorian England, and includes real world devices created ahead of their time and/or imaginary devices based on prevailing theories of the era and/or prevalent ideas of the supernatural.”
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Benares Historic House, 1507 Clarkson Road North, Mississauga. Admission is $19.50 for a family; $7.80 per adult and $6.24 for students and children.
