Hard work and following the team’s system of play has landed Craig Spence a spot on the blue line with the Mississauga Steelheads.
The OHL club announced the recent signing of their seventh-round pick (128th overall) in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. A native of Chatham, Spence had three goals and nine assists in 45 games with the Chatham Maroons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League last season.
“We are pleased to add Craig to our defensive core,” head coach and general manager James Richmond said of the six-foot-two, 170-pound defenceman. “He plays hard every shift and has really picked up on the way we want our team to play. Right shot defence are a premium in today’s game and Craig will grow into a solid OHL player.
“We look forward to seeing him in the blue and white very soon.”
The Steelheads also announced they will be holding pre-game festivities for fans before their home opener on Friday, September 20th against the Niagara IceDogs at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre. The tailgating experience, which will be located just outside the main gates, will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with live music by country singer Paige Rutledge.
There’ll be a BBQ with a $5 menu and beer priced at $6, and for the kids there’ll be a number of games and activities, including an interactive shooting contest where they can test their skills shooting on Sauga and be entered for a chance to win a team signed jersey.
The home opener is a Winning Night, meaning with a Steelheads win fans in attendance can redeem their tickets at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre box office for a free ticket to the game on Nov. 1st.
The puck drop against the IceDogs is set for 7 p.m.
